Sherman's Blunder: Dismissing Eagles Fans Backfires

Richard Sherman found himself in a tough spot after Quinyon Mitchell made two crucial interceptions against the San Francisco 49ers. The Eagles, who are the reigning Super Bowl champions, are set to begin their journey toward Super Bowl LX on Sunday at Lincoln Financial Field. The 49ers, coming off a win in the NFC East, had George Kittle excited for the game before he suffered what looked like a torn Achilles injury.

The Wild Card round clash between these two NFC powerhouses started with a lot of energy. The 49ers opened the game with a score, as Brock Purdy connected with DeMarcus Robinson. However, the Eagles quickly responded with two touchdowns from Dallas Goedert, including a controversial reception that sparked some debate.

The 49ers managed to take the lead in the fourth quarter when Jauan Jennings threw a 29-yard touchdown pass to Christian McCaffrey. But the Eagles got a boost minutes later when they punted, and Mitchell intercepted Purdy.

This was the second time Purdy had been intercepted by the First-Team All-Pro, who was recognized as one of the league's best following an impressive 2025 season. His performance against the 49ers came at a critical moment, not only helping his team in the playoffs but also boosting his reputation in front of a former great like Sherman.

As the 49ers drove downfield to score on their opening drive, Sherman took to social media to comment on Mitchell's performance. He noted that even though Mitchell had been named an All-Pro, he was still being targeted by opponents. Sherman wrote: “Was told by Eagles fans that you can’t throw at QM but as I said offenses do not fear CBs that do not take the ball away.”

“The worse thing that can happen is a PBU. 49ers attack the ALL-Pro the first drive of the game to try to set the tone. Hadn’t given up a TD all season.”

Sherman’s comments didn’t hold up well. Mitchell had gone through the regular season without an interception, largely because quarterbacks avoided throwing toward him due to his strong play. However, early in the third quarter, Purdy attempted a pass to Skyy Moore, only for Mitchell to jump in front of the receiver and make the play. Then, in the opening stages of the fourth quarter, Mitchell did it again.

Purdy threw across his body for tight end Jake Tonges, but Mitchell managed to grab the ball as he fell to the turf. Sherman revisited his earlier statement, writing in a conversation with a fan: “That’s elite CB play.”

At the time, the 49ers led 17-16, and the Eagles eventually kicked a field goal to reclaim the lead. Purdy then led another drive downfield and connected with McCaffrey for another touchdown. The 49ers defense held on to secure a 23-19 victory, advancing to the Divisional Round of the playoffs.
