Eagles' Nick Sirianni Stands by AJ Brown Amid Drops and Drama

A.J. Brown's Performance and the Coach's Support

Philadelphia Eagles coach Nick Sirianni has come to the defense of star wide receiver A.J. Brown following a 23-19 playoff loss to the San Francisco 49ers. The game was marked by multiple drops from Brown and a heated exchange between the player and the coach on the sideline.

Sirianni emphasized that Brown possesses "the best hands I've ever seen" and highlighted his ability to make different types of catches. He acknowledged that with the number of targets Brown receives, some drops are inevitable. Additionally, he noted that the wind conditions during the game affected the ball in the air. "I know he will beat himself up on that," said the coach.

Brown had two drops during the game, tying a career high. One of these occurred with just over two minutes left in the contest on third-and-5 from Philadelphia's 40-yard line. At that point, the Eagles were trailing by four points. Jalen Hurts managed to keep the drive alive by completing a pass to tight end Dallas Goedert on fourth down. The Eagles eventually reached San Francisco's 21-yard line, but their drive stalled, ending their season in a disappointing manner.

Brown finished the game with three catches for 25 yards on seven targets. However, he chose not to speak to the media after the game.

A Heated Sideline Exchange

The tension between Sirianni and Brown became evident late in the first half. During a third-down incompletion, Brown and Eagles left tackle Jordan Mailata were slow to get off the field, prompting Sirianni to run down the sideline and yell at them to move quickly as the special teams prepared to punt. Brown appeared to take issue with this, leading to a face-to-face confrontation before Eagles chief security officer Dom DiSandro intervened and guided Brown away.

Mailata, who played alongside Brown, expressed admiration for the receiver's passion and dedication. "I love that — that passion, that fire, that grit," Mailata said. "He gives everything every week for us. He's dealt with some injuries, and he's made himself available every game this year to be out there playing."

When asked what Brown said to Sirianni, Mailata humorously replied that it was "not my business" and joked about trying to "get in the way" of the coach and Brown. "Hey, between me and Dom, that's a lot of space," he added.

A Rocky Season for Brown

Sirianni downplayed the incident, stating, "I think he knows how I feel about him. I have a special relationship with him. We've probably [gone] through every emotion you can possibly have together. We've laughed together. We've cried together. We've yelled at each other. We're both emotional. I was trying to get him off the field, and that happens in this game. That happens in this game, but I love him."

Brown's season had its challenges, starting slowly and expressing frustration at times, whether in his locker or on social media. However, he saw an increase in targets and production around the midpoint of the season. By the end of the regular season, he recorded 78 catches for 1,003 yards and seven touchdowns.

Despite Brown's efforts, the Eagles' offense struggled to find consistency throughout the season, which ultimately caught up to them in the elimination game against the 49ers.

Mailata praised Brown's leadership and character, noting that he consistently picked up the team when they failed to execute. "He's been pretty vocal," Mailata said. "He's led with great humility and character."
