Honda's Iconic Supercar Makes an Unlikely Italian Appearance

The Legacy of the NSX Lives On

Even in a country known for its high-performance sports cars like Ferraris and Lamborghinis, the first-generation Honda NSX has managed to capture the attention of various design firms. This iconic Japanese supercar has not only stood the test of time but has also inspired new interpretations from different creative minds.

Following the discontinuation of Honda’s facelifted second-generation NSX, there has been a lot of speculation about what the next version of this legendary car might look like. Some reports suggested that it could be an all-electric model based on the 0 Series platform, though it might not carry the NSX name. Until Honda officially reveals what (if anything) will replace the NSX, fans can only imagine what the future holds.

A Tale of Two Tributes

Despite the uncertainty surrounding Honda's plans, the NSX is already experiencing a resurgence, thanks to two Italian design firms. It seems to be a coincidence that both companies are working on their own versions of the NSX, with no apparent connection between them.

In July, JAS Motorsport, a well-known Honda tuning specialist, announced its first road car. Alongside Pininfarina, which would handle the styling, the company provided very few details at the time. Then, in September, Italdesign made headlines with news that it would be creating a limited-run tribute to the NSX. Known for designing the GT-R50, this announcement excited fans with the possibility of a stunning new Honda creation.

The Pininfarina and JAS Motorsport Project

Now, it turns out that the collaboration between Pininfarina and JAS Motorsport will also be an NSX revival. This project is set to debut early next year. According to the latest press materials from the two brands, the car will be a "derivative of the 1990-generation Honda NSX" that "offers enthusiasts and collectors a modern definition of the Grand Touring concept."

While the exact interpretation of the latter statement remains open, some details are known. The car will feature a full carbon fiber body, motorsport-refined components, an original "NSX-inspired V6 engine," and a six-speed manual transmission.

Italdesign's Teaser

On the other hand, Italdesign has offered little more than an additional teaser since its initial announcement. However, the light design suggests a first-generation NSX, and there appears to be a roof scoop to feed air into the engine bay.

Pininfarina Revisits the NSX

Regardless of who was first to announce their NSX project, this isn't the first time that Pininfarina has worked on a legendary Honda. In fact, the Italian design firm created the very first concept car for the Big Red back in 1984. Dubbed the 'HP-X,' this wedge-shaped vehicle was a product of its era and inspired the styling and development of the first-generation NSX.

It's easy to see the similarities between the HP-X and the NSX. From the sharp front end to the large glass canopy, both cars share striking visual elements. They also have a kindred spirit, as the HP-X focused on aerodynamics, efficiency, and innovative cooling rather than outright power. Like the first-generation NSX, the concept featured a mid-mounted V6 engine, albeit smaller at 2.0 liters.

To Each Their Own

The prospect of two NSX arrivals on the horizon is exciting. Japan's supercar is having a moment, and it's well-deserved. Moreover, it highlights the fact that while general consumers may prefer automation, enthusiasts are investing in driver's cars to make them even more capable for thrill.

Cars like the NSX will continue to see iterations, even as they were refined from the factory. Ultimately, each of these tributes will be able to exist concurrently, regardless of any similarities. After all, even the most saturated niches still offer opportunity — a Land Rover customizer has recently expanded into the air-cooled Porsche 911 market.

Conclusion

The legacy of the NSX continues to inspire new generations of car enthusiasts and designers. Whether through the efforts of JAS Motorsport and Pininfarina or Italdesign, the NSX remains a symbol of innovation and performance. As the automotive world evolves, the NSX stands as a testament to the enduring appeal of a well-crafted supercar.
