WNBA Star Napheesa Collier Speaks Out Against League Leadership

Napheesa Collier, a leading figure in the WNBA and a five-time All-Star, has not held back in her criticism of the league’s leadership. In a recent statement, she called out Commissioner Cathy Engelbert for what she described as "the worst leadership in the world." Her comments touched on several key issues, including officiating, free speech, and the financial compensation of players.

Collier emphasized that while the league may be concerned about player health, it is failing to prioritize the quality of the game itself. She stated, "Whether the league cares about the health of the players is one thing, but to also not care about the product we put on the floor is truly self-sabotage." She added, "Year after year, the only thing that remains consistent is the lack of accountability from our leaders."

Conversations with the Commissioner

Collier shared details of a conversation she had with Engelbert in February. During this discussion, she asked about the starting salaries for young players like Caitlin Clark, Angel Reese, and Paige Bueckers, as well as how the league plans to address ongoing officiating issues. According to Collier, Engelbert responded by saying, "Well, only the losers complain about the refs."

When Collier questioned why players driving significant revenue for the league were being paid so little during their first four years, Engelbert reportedly told her that Caitlin should be grateful for the $16 million she makes off the court because the WNBA provides her with a platform. Collier also claimed that Engelbert suggested players should be thankful for the media rights deal.

Officiating Issues and Player Safety

Collier, who was the runner-up for MVP in the past two seasons, has been vocal about the league's officiating problems. She sat out the final two games of the Lynx playoff series due to an ankle injury sustained during a collision in Game 3. No foul was called on the play, which led to a viral postgame press conference by her coach, Cheryl Reeve, who criticized the officiating as "malpractice."

Reeve was ejected and suspended for the next game, where the Lynx faced elimination. Collier described the league’s continued disregard for officiating issues as "negligence." She said, "Just hearing over and over and over again that we have the best refs in the world. We don't have a problem." She added, "You know none of the injuries are due to physicality or the way that we're reffing. It's an insult to my intelligence, honestly."

Financial Discrepancies and Media Deals

Collier’s comments came just hours after the league announced a new multiyear media rights deal with USA Network. She pointed out the contradiction between the league’s financial success and its treatment of players. "They cry that they don't have enough money to pay the players, that they don't have the sustainability to pay the players when they're selling teams for $300 million when valuations are going up to almost half a billion dollars, like it doesn't make sense to us," she said.

Collier, who is also vice-president of the WNBA players' union and co-founder of the offseason 3-on-3 league "Unrivaled," is preparing for upcoming CBA negotiations. The current collective bargaining agreement expires on October 31, and if no new deal is reached, the league could lock out the players.

Commissioner's Response

In response to Collier’s comments, Engelbert issued a statement expressing her respect for Collier and all players in the league. She said, "Together, we have all worked tirelessly to transform this league. My focus remains on ensuring a bright future for the players and the WNBA, including collaborating on how we continue to elevate the game." However, she expressed disappointment in how Collier characterized their conversations and the league’s leadership.

Collier acknowledged that she might face fines for her remarks, stating, "I'm sure that they will fine me. I mean, it seems like anything with free speech is fined now." Despite the potential consequences, she remains committed to advocating for better conditions for players.
