Potential Player Swap Between Jack Bird and Nathan Brown
League veterans Jack Bird and Nathan Brown are reportedly considering a surprise player swap that could reshape the rosters of their respective clubs. Bird, currently contracted with Wests Tigers until the end of 2026, and Brown, who is under contract with Manly, have both played for the NSW Blues. The potential move has sparked interest as it could benefit both teams.
Manly has already addressed a gap in their pack by signing St George Illawarra prop Viliami Fifita. Fifita, who made four NRL appearances for the Dragons, is returning to Manly, where he began his career. This move, along with the expected re-signing of Siua Taukeiaho and the return of Taniela Paseka from injury, is expected to strengthen Manly’s forward pack for the 2026 season.
In addition, Manly has signed South Sydney prop Davvy Moale, with the possibility of him joining the club earlier than 2027. This move could free up funds for the Rabbitohs to sign David Fifita, another key player.
The arrival of Viliami Fifita and potentially Moale during the summer could give Manly the flexibility to consider Bird, who is versatile enough to play in multiple positions. The Tigers have given Bird permission to explore other options, and if he moves to Manly, the Tigers could receive Brown in return.
Brown, who started his NRL career at the joint venture, has established himself as an enforcer throughout his career. His hard-running style and fearless kick-off returns make him a valuable addition to any team. If he were to join the Tigers, he could bolster their improving pack, which includes Terrell May, who was nominated for Dally M prop of the year in his first season at the club.
There is a difference in the contract values of Bird and Brown for next year, but it is not considered a major obstacle. Manly has recently extended Aaron Schoupp’s contract and is working on extending the deals of Tom and Jake Trbojevic.
Meanwhile, there is uncertainty surrounding the futures of Wests Tigers’ star players Jarome Luai and Jahream Bula. Both have contract options that could make them free agents from November 1. Bula’s contract allows the Tigers to retain him at a cost of approximately $900,000 for 2027.
Reviving the World Club Challenge
Brisbane is open to participating in the World Club Challenge, a match that the NRL hopes to revive. The event was scrapped in 2025 due to scheduling conflicts, as Penrith, the NRL premiers, had already committed to playing in Las Vegas.
Broncos chief executive Dave Donaghy confirmed that the 2026 champions are keen to take on their Super League counterparts after their epic 26-22 win over Melbourne. “We’ll have those discussions with the NRL later this week,” Donaghy said. “We understand it wasn’t played last year with Penrith playing in Las Vegas, but we do see it as an important concept for the growth of our sport internationally.”
Hull KR will face Wigan in the Super League grand final at Old Trafford this weekend. However, the World Club Challenge is likely to proceed only if Wigan wins. Hull KR has already committed to taking on Leeds for their 2026 season opener in Las Vegas, which could complicate the logistics of a Broncos clash.
Despite these challenges, the NRL is looking to boost the standing of the English competition and will work with all parties to make the World Club Challenge happen.
International Squad Announcements
More squads have been named for the season-ending internationals. Kiwis coach Stacey Jones has announced a 21-man squad for the Pacific Championships against Samoa and Tonga, including several stars who were unavailable last year due to injury. These include Nelson Asofa-Solomona, Dylan Brown, Kieran Foran, Moses Leota, Ronaldo Mulitalo, and Briton Nikora.
Foran, who has retired from the NRL, will be part of one last campaign for the Kiwis. Maroons centre Robert Toia will make his debut for Tonga, joining fellow newcomers Stefano Utoikamanu, Leka Halasima, and Demetric Vaimauga. Jason Taumalolo and Addin Fonua-Blake have been named as co-captains.
Samoa has also named a strong squad, including premiership-winning Broncos prop Payne Haas. The forward pack includes Junior Paulo, Terrell May, and Josh Papalii.
Grand Final Fallout
Clive Churchill medallist Reece Walsh will be free to make his Kangaroos debut after avoiding a grand final ban. Walsh can avoid a two-game ban for his first-half high shot on Xavier Coates by paying a $3000 fine and pleading guilty.
Roosters NRLW back-rower Aliyah Nasio was referred directly to the judiciary for striking following a brawl in which she traded punches with Broncos star Julia Robinson. She faces potential disciplinary action.
Melbourne lock Trent Loiero is facing a 2-3 game ban for his grade 2 careless high tackle on Brendan Piakura. Piakura and Jahrome Hughes will avoid missing any game time for low-grade incidents in the decider.
Nasio is facing time on the sidelines for her involvement in the on-field melee. Rooster Jasmin Strange is facing either a $400 fine or a one-match ban if she pleads guilty to tripping Brisbane’s Gayle Broughton.
Roosters hooker Keeley Davis and teammate Rima Butler were named in the Jillaroos Pacific Championship squad, with both forwards cleared of suffering serious facial injuries in a head clash. Davis was diagnosed with a haematoma, which was drained for a quick recovery. Butler was also cleared of any structural damage and named as one of five potential debutants in Australia’s Pacific Championships squad.
