Jocelyn Kelleher’s Journey to the Grand Final

Jocelyn Kelleher has played a pivotal role in the Roosters' journey to the grand final, showcasing remarkable talent and determination. However, Kelleher is aware that she must remain true to herself and not attempt to emulate her injured teammate, Tarryn Aiken.

Aiken, the reigning Golden Boot winner, has been a standout performer in both the NRLW grand final and the Pacific Championships final. Unfortunately, she will miss the upcoming match due to a season-ending ACL injury. This absence means the Roosters are not considered favorites against the Broncos, as Aiken's ability to create opportunities from nothing is a key strength of the team.

Despite this, it would be unwise to overlook the Roosters, as they have remained unbeaten this season. Kelleher's crucial field goal against the Sharks helped them qualify for the grand final, highlighting her importance to the team.

"I think Tarryn is the best half in the world, and I stand by that because she's amazing," Kelleher said after her milestone game at her home ground. "I had a meeting with 'Strangey' (Roosters coach John Strange) a couple of days before the game and he asked me how I was feeling. I said I was watching Tarryn and was trying to do everything she does because she's so amazing."

However, Kelleher also recognized the need to focus on her own strengths. "But then at the same time I had to keep reminding myself that I'm not Tarryn. I don't do what she does, and I can't do what she does. I've got different features of my game and I had to focus on what I could do rather than the amazing things that Tarryn can pull out."

Roosters skipper Isabelle Kelly has observed Kelleher's growth over the years. The playmaker earned an Origin debut against Aiken earlier this season, which marked a significant milestone in her career.

"They're two completely different types of players," Kelly said. "I think they've both got their strengths that they really own in the game, and Jocelyn has really learned what her strengths are this year. Being involved in State of Origin helped her build her confidence up and realize that she's a great player and really respected here at the Roosters."

Kelleher has come to understand her unique abilities and has embraced them. "I've known for a long time what she's been capable of, and I'm glad she's stuck to what's worked for her and has backed herself all the way."

Goalkicking and Game Strategy

While Aiken excels in creating opportunities, Kelleher's goalkicking has proven to be a crucial asset. She struggled at the start of the season but has since found her rhythm. Her accuracy from the kicking tee will be vital against the high-flying Broncos.

"I'd only ever kicked one before and I think that was in league tag," she said. "I've definitely sprayed a couple practising at training, so that was the best one I've ever kicked."

Kelleher faced challenges early in the season, particularly with her goalkicking. "I struggled at the start of the year with my goalkicking. I think I started overthinking things because we had a different goalkicking coach in Origin to what we usually have. There were lots of different opinions, so I was struggling, especially after the Dragons game where I was missing ones that I shouldn't have."

To overcome this, she took a step back and focused on enjoying the process. "I just went to the park that week and tried to forget everything and literally just have fun with goalkicking again. I've changed my style since the start of the year, I've cut out the extra stuff and once I line it up, I just trust the muscle memory and kick it."
