Mississippi State Prepares for High-Stakes Matchup Against Texas A&M

Mississippi State is set to face another formidable challenge in the SEC, following a hard-fought overtime loss to a ranked opponent. The Bulldogs (4-1) fell to No. 15 Tennessee in a thrilling game that ended with a 41-34 victory for the Volunteers at Neyland Stadium, which was filled with over 100,000 fans. This setback serves as a learning opportunity for MSU as they prepare to take on another top-tier SEC team, No. 6 Texas A&M (4-0), this Saturday at Kyle Field.

The Bulldogs have already made a name for themselves this season with a notable win over No. 25 Arizona State, a playoff team from last year. Despite the loss to Tennessee, head coach Jeff Lebby remains focused on progress and improvement.

“It doesn’t matter what happens on Saturday on the right side or the wrong side. You got to get better,” Lebby said during a recent press conference. “And I think because that’s the message every single week. I’m hopeful our guys are able to clear this and have the ability to go prepare the right way.”

Lebby emphasized the importance of addressing key issues that arose during the game against Tennessee. The Bulldogs struggled with third-down efficiency, committing six penalties and turning the ball over twice. Additionally, they failed to stop Tennessee on the first play of overtime and couldn’t match the Volunteers' performance when it mattered most.

“There was a ton of growth. I told the guys today, the thing that I was most proud of was, without a doubt, how things had gone from play one to play 87,” Lebby reflected. “Man, our guys continued to play and believed that we were winning the football game the entire time. And there was, there was great energy, I thought we fought our butt off.”

Despite the disappointment, Lebby praised the team's resilience and effort. However, he stressed the need for better execution in critical moments.

“Very disappointed and frustrated that we weren’t able to make the plays to be plus one at the end of the game. And so, obviously, proud of, again, our toughness, our effort, our physicality. But, man, making sure we’re ready to go make the plays to go be plus one and be on the right side,” he added.

Texas A&M's Recent Performances

Texas A&M has shown its ability to win close games this season. The Aggies secured a 41-40 victory over Notre Dame with a last-minute comeback and also managed a 16-10 win over Auburn. Their consistent performance highlights their strength as a team.

“They’ve been really explosive in the throw game. Two great receivers. They’ve got two really, really good running backs. And they’ve got a veteran O-line that’s played a lot of ball defensively,” Lebby said about the Aggies.

He also noted the importance of protecting the quarterback and avoiding sacks, which has been a significant factor in Texas A&M’s success.

“There are some similarities from the standpoint that they’ve created a bunch of sacks. And that’s going to be a huge point of emphasis, again, for us this week. We’ve got to find ways to protect, keep two upright, and give him a chance to pitch and catch,” Lebby explained.

Facing the '12th Man'

As the Bulldogs prepare for the game at Kyle Field, they will have to contend with the intense atmosphere known as "The 12th Man." Lebby believes his team is ready for the challenge, citing the mental toughness of his players.

“Yeah, I just got through talking to the travel squad, and I think the coolest thing about going on the road in this conference is we got 74 guys getting on the plane to go play in front of over 100,000 people,” Lebby said. “It’s about us and having the right mindset and mentality to, man, go play one play at a time and give us the best chance to go win.”

With a strong sense of urgency and determination, Mississippi State is poised to take on Texas A&M and prove their resilience once again.
