A Fresh Start After a Dominant Win

The Winnipeg Blue Bombers are riding high after their best game of the season, a performance that showcased a well-rounded team effort across all three phases of the game. The quarterback finally found his rhythm, leading the offense to a 40-3 victory over Hamilton on September 27. It was a clear sign that the team was clicking on all cylinders.

However, just as things were looking good, the team had to take a break. The bye week came at an unexpected time, but it turned out to be exactly what the team needed. While some might have been frustrated by the sudden pause, the players and coaches saw it as a chance to regroup and refocus.

“We came back first team meeting and everyone was still fired up,” said linebacker Tony Jones. “It felt like the juice was still there.” This energy didn’t fade after the break. In fact, the team seemed more motivated than ever.

One reason for this renewed focus could be the review of the previous game’s film. Players and coaches spent time watching the tape, analyzing what worked and what could be improved. For many, the break was a much-needed mental and physical reset after 11 consecutive games. As Jones noted, “It was a perfect time for us, especially after a dominant performance like that.”

With only three games left before the playoffs, the urgency is increasing. The team knows they need to maintain their momentum as they head into their next matchup in Edmonton. Quarterback Zach Collaros acknowledged that the big win over the Tiger-Cats helped set the tone. But he also pointed out that the grind of the season has played its part in shaping the team’s identity.

“You understand what your role is, you understand the system you’re playing in better and better,” Collaros said. “You get to know your teammates better. That is the most important thing. You feel like you really know everybody at this point. The tight-knit feel of everything – it feels like this time of the year.”

Over the past five seasons, the Blue Bombers have consistently found another level when it matters most. Last week, they improved to 8-7, securing a share of third place in the CFL West. However, the division is highly competitive, with several teams vying for playoff spots.

“It’s a crazy West Division right now,” said running back Brady Oliveira. “Looks like it’s going to come down to the wire.” Collaros agreed, noting the parity among teams. “A lot of good football teams,” he said. “Every year, however the records shake out, it usually comes down to a handful of plays. And the teams who are able to make less mistakes or make the big plays in the critical moments… you usually win a lot of games.”

While the team is in a tight race, they remain focused on the process. Some players used the break to spend time with family, while others stayed in Winnipeg to stay in shape. Jones, for example, chose to stay in the city, working out every morning and keeping his body in top condition. A trip to Speedworld for go-kart racing with teammates provided a fun way to bond and keep the team spirit alive.

Oliveira appreciated the mental reset, even though he personally enjoys the grind. He would have preferred to keep moving forward, maintaining the momentum that the team has built. Coach Mike O’Shea heard similar sentiments from other players. When asked about the team’s position in the West, he simply said, “It’s perfect. It has to be. It’s where we’re at. There’s no changing it now. Keep getting better and learning from what we’re doing. And keep doing it for the right reasons.”

As the team heads into the final stretch of the season, the energy and unity within the group remain strong. With playoff hopes still very much alive, the Blue Bombers are determined to make the most of the opportunities ahead.
