Emily Blunt Joins Hollywood in Outrage Over AI Actor Tilly Norwood

The Rise of Tilly Norwood: An AI Actor Stirs Hollywood
Hollywood is witnessing a new and controversial figure in the entertainment industry — Tilly Norwood, an AI actor who has captured attention after her creators claimed she is in talks with talent agencies. At first glance, Tilly’s Instagram page might seem like that of a young, aspiring actress. She poses for photos, shares content, and even showcases a fully AI-generated comedy sketch where she describes having “girl next door vibes.” Her creators have even written on her page, “I may be AI, but I'm feeling very real emotions right now. I am so excited for what's coming next!”
Despite this, the presence of Tilly Norwood has sparked significant backlash from Hollywood’s most powerful actors’ union and A-list stars.
Hollywood’s Disapproval of AI Actors
The Screen Actors Guild-American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA) has strongly condemned the creation of Tilly Norwood. In a statement, the union emphasized that the AI actor is not a performer but rather a character generated by a computer program trained on the work of countless professional performers. They argue that Tilly lacks life experience, genuine emotion, and that audiences are not interested in watching content that is untethered from the human experience.
“This has no life experience to draw from, no emotion, and from what we've seen, audiences aren't interested in watching computer-generated content untethered from the human experience,” the union said.
Notable figures such as Emily Blunt, Natasha Lyonne, and Whoopi Goldberg have also voiced their concerns about the rise of AI in the entertainment industry.
The Creator’s Perspective
Tilly Norwood was created by Dutch actor and comedian Eline Van der Velden, who reportedly aimed to make her the “next Scarlett Johansson.” Van der Velden, through her company Particle6, has defended the project, stating that Tilly is not a replacement for humans but a form of creative expression.
“Creating Tilly has been, for me, an act of imagination and craftsmanship, not unlike drawing a character, writing a role or shaping a performance,” Van der Velden wrote. She added that such creations should be judged as part of their own genre rather than compared to human actors.
However, the controversy surrounding Tilly has only grown, especially after Deadline reported on a recent summit where Van der Velden discussed her AI production studio and a new AI talent agency called Xicoia. According to reports, she suggested that Hollywood studios and agencies are embracing AI under the radar and hinted at upcoming public announcements regarding high-profile projects using the technology.
Ethical Concerns and Industry Backlash
AI has long been a contentious issue in Hollywood, particularly during labor strikes two years ago when writers and actors demanded protections against the technology. SAG-AFTRA reminded agencies and studios that using Tilly in projects could violate the contractual protections they secured after the 2023 strike.
“It doesn't solve any 'problem' — it creates the problem of using stolen performances to put actors out of work, jeopardizing performer livelihoods and devaluing human artistry,” the union stated.
Actress Natasha Lyonne, known for her roles in Poker Face and Orange Is the New Black, has taken a strong stance against Tilly Norwood. She urged others to boycott any talent agencies that engage with the AI actor, emphasizing that her team is working with “ethical AI” to create a feature film starring real actors.
“Any talent agency that engages in this should be boycotted by all guilds,” Lyonne said, calling the creation “deeply misguided & totally disturbed.”
Emily Blunt, an Oscar-nominated actress, expressed similar fears when shown a video of Tilly. “That's an AI? Good Lord, we're screwed,” she said. “Please stop taking away our human connection.”
Meanwhile, Whoopi Goldberg, appearing on The View, argued that audiences can tell the difference between humans and synthetic performers. She was skeptical about concerns that AI would steal jobs from human actors, stating that “move differently, our faces move differently, our bodies move differently.”
The Future of AI in Hollywood
As Tilly Norwood continues to gain attention, the debate over AI in the entertainment industry shows no signs of slowing down. With the potential for AI to disrupt traditional roles and workflows, the industry remains divided between innovation and preservation of human artistry.
The discussion around AI extends beyond just Tilly Norwood. Recent developments include AI being used in Oscar-winning films, with the Academy allowing AI-made films to compete for awards. Meanwhile, concerns over job losses and ethical use of AI continue to dominate conversations among actors, writers, and industry leaders.
As the line between human and artificial performance blurs, the future of Hollywood will likely depend on how it chooses to navigate this rapidly evolving landscape.
