Exciting Developments from Colorado State Golf Tournaments

As the first day of various state golf tournaments across Colorado came to a close, several compelling storylines emerged. Two standout performances and a strong team effort set the stage for what promises to be an exciting second day.

Fairview's two golfers, Ash Edwards and Miles Kuhl, made a significant impact in the 5A classification at Bookcliff Country Club in Grand Junction. Their performance was nothing short of impressive, leading the entire field. Meanwhile, Broomfield showcased a full-team effort that positioned them as a top contender for first place. The question now is whether these teams can maintain their lead through the remainder of the tournament.

Local Representation Across All Classifications

The tournaments featured a strong presence of local teams and players across all four classifications, highlighting the depth of talent in Colorado.

5A Classification

Although Fairview couldn't qualify its full team for the 5A state tournament, its two representatives made a statement. Sophomore Ash Edwards led the field with a 6-under par 65, closely followed by senior Miles Kuhl with a 66. Castle View’s Gavin Amella secured second place with a 66.

The competition in the 5A classification was tight, with only three strokes separating the top six teams. However, Arapahoe took the lead with a collective score of 216 after the first round. Erie, the only local team to qualify a full squad, finished 10th with a score of 225. Junior Mason Bahr contributed a 74, while seniors Sean Cary, Cole Reseigh, and Noah Haas added 75, 76, and 79 respectively. Other notable local performers included Boulder’s Pierce Johnson (74) and Anton Taranda (79), and Legacy’s Mason Lundstrom (77) and Cruz Castillo (83).

4A Classification

Broomfield dominated the 4A classification at Fox Hill Club in Longmont, securing a commanding lead with a team score of 218. This put them five strokes ahead of second-place Loveland and seven ahead of third-place Mead. Eagle’s freshman duo, Rev Bonniwell and Max Music, performed exceptionally well, each carding a 2-over par 72 to finish fifth.

In the individual standings, Ian Carlin placed 14th with a 74, while teammate Jackson Fleckenstein finished 52nd with an 80. Mead’s Stryker Leick showed strong form, placing fourth with a 71, just one stroke behind the leaders. Other notable local performances included Skyline’s Zack LaCrosse (73, ninth) and Jake LaCrosse (78, 36th), Monarch’s Rhys Ayandele (74, 14th), Bode Truman (77, 28th), Grady DeCola (81, 55th), and Jake Bradley (82, 62nd). Niwot’s Moses Lance (76, 23rd), William Jones (77, 28th), Jackson Sessa (78, 36th), and Liam Petersen (79, 45th) also made their mark. Silver Creek’s Will Lambert (77, 28th) and Blake Gorr (79, 45th), Longmont’s Wyatt Bogue (77, 28th) and Jayson Mitts (80, 52nd), and Frederick’s Sam Mazzotta (88, 77th) rounded out the local qualifiers.

3A Classification

Holy Family was the only local team competing in the 3A classification at Eagle Ranch Golf Course. They finished ninth with a score of 238, well behind the leader, Lutheran, which posted a 221. In the individual race, Peak to Peak’s Jack Brayman led with a 1-under par 71, placing third overall. His teammate Will Rigney followed with an 85. Holy Family’s Bobby Flaherty tied for fourth with an even par, supported by Andrew Degrassi (82) and Alex Kilpatrick (84).

2A Classification

Dawson led the local contingent in the 2A team race with a collective score of 237. Jefferson Academy placed eighth with a score of 240, while Frontier Academy topped the field with a 229. Teague Murrey placed seventh with a 4-over par 74, followed by Ben Pederson (41st, 82) and Dylan Bahrenburg (55th, 84). Dawson’s Kale Macken (13th, 77), Jonah Lodge (17th, 78), Finn Almond (41st, 82), and Oscar Spruill (83rd, 96) also contributed to the team’s efforts.
