Can the Bills Still Secure the 1st Seed in the AFC?

Heading into Week 5 of the NFL season, the Buffalo Bills were one of only two unbeaten teams in the league. They had faced a manageable schedule, with their only win over a Super Bowl contender coming against the Baltimore Ravens. Led by quarterback Josh Allen, they looked like the team to beat in the AFC and were on track for a sixth consecutive AFC East title. However, their recent loss to the New England Patriots has raised questions about their ability to maintain that dominance.

In that game, Allen was held in check, throwing for just 20 points while committing two turnovers himself. The defense, which has often been the Bills’ downfall in the postseason, struggled as well, allowing the Patriots to score 17 points in the second half. This loss has sparked concern about whether the Bills can still secure the 1st seed in the AFC playoffs.

Getting the 1st seed is more than just about earning a bye week—it offers a much easier path to the AFC Championship. Last season, the Chiefs, as the top seed, avoided a tough matchup in the Divisional Round by facing the winner of a lower-seeded game. In contrast, the Bills faced a difficult challenge against the Ravens. For the Bills, securing the 1st seed remains possible, as their remaining schedule is the ninth-easiest in the league according to ESPN. While they still have games against the Chiefs, Buccaneers, and Eagles, these are all winnable contests.

The primary threat to the Bills' first seed hopes is the Kansas City Chiefs. Currently, the Chiefs are two wins behind the Bills, but their upcoming schedule includes teams like the Lions, Commanders, and Texans. With their strength of schedule ranked 10th, the Chiefs could close the gap if they continue to perform well.

Is the Defense Fixable?

Buffalo’s defense is currently ranked 21st in the league based on efficiency metrics, and it sits at 24th in PFF grading. Key areas of concern include tackling and coverage, with grades of 45.4 and 52.3 respectively. While the defense wasn’t solely responsible for the loss to the Patriots, it allowed New England to score 17 points in the second half—a troubling sign given the caliber of offenses the Bills will face in the playoffs.

Over the past few seasons, the defense has been a consistent weakness during the postseason. In their five playoff losses since 2021, the Bills have allowed an average of 33.2 points per game. Against the Ravens, their run defense struggled, allowing Derrick Henry and Lamar Jackson to combine for 239 yards and three touchdowns. Against the Patriots, it was the coverage unit that faltered, as Drake Maye threw for 273 yards and led two second-half touchdowns.

However, there is hope for improvement. Maxwell Hairston, the Bills’ first-round pick, is expected to return soon, and Cole Bishop, a second-round pick from last year, has shown signs of progress. Ed Oliver, a talented defensive tackle, is also set to make his return. These additions could provide a boost to a defense that has struggled with injuries and inconsistent play.

Despite this, the Bills still face challenges. Linebacker Matt Milano, who returned after a pectoral injury, re-aggravated the injury against the Patriots, and his status remains uncertain. While the team has depth at the position, a player of Milano’s caliber is hard to replace. Relying on young talent to step up might not be ideal, but it may be necessary if the defense continues to struggle.

It's Not Time to Panic… Yet

At this point in the season, the Bills have earned the benefit of the doubt. They still have the potential to turn things around, whether through defensive improvements or offensive consistency. ESPN still gives them the second-best odds of winning the Super Bowl at 9.9%, meaning it’s not time to panic yet.

If the same issues persist in the playoffs, however, the Bills may once again fall short of their ultimate goal. Their success will depend on how quickly their defense can stabilize and how well the offense can return to its previous form. For now, the Bills remain in the hunt for the 1st seed, but the path ahead will test their resilience.
