Another Big Injury, Another Big Win for the Bucs as Mayfield Sparks MVP Hype

TAMPA, Fla. — Baker Mayfield delivered a standout performance for the Buccaneers, leading them to a 30-19 victory over the 49ers. Mayfield threw two touchdown passes and avoided any interceptions, showcasing his leadership on the field. One of the most memorable moments came when he made a highlight-reel scramble for a first down, drawing cheers from the crowd at Raymond James Stadium.

The fans at the stadium chanted "MVP, MVP" throughout the game, showing their support for Mayfield. After the win, Mayfield acknowledged the significance of the game, saying, "It's Week 6, so we got a big one next week. It's awesome to have the support, don't get me wrong, we are just getting started."

Mayfield completed 17 of 23 passes for 256 yards and two touchdowns. One of those touchdowns was a crucial 45-yard pass to rookie Tez Johnson. This play came just a few plays after Mayfield executed a remarkable third-and-14 scramble that resulted in a first down.

Bucs head coach Todd Bowles was not surprised by Mayfield's performance, although even he admitted that the scramble was "pretty spectacular." He said, "I was in disbelief just like everybody else. It happens every week or so. He makes those types of plays, and you pray that he doesn't get hurt or anything happens to him."

After the Mayfield-to-Johnson touchdown, Mayfield didn't notice the MVP chants. However, Johnson did, and he was initially confused, thinking the chants were for him. He asked teammate Sterling Shepard if the fans were talking about him. Shepard confirmed it was for Mayfield, which left Johnson in awe.

The Buccaneers secured the win without key players such as wide receivers Mike Evans, Chris Godwin, and Jalen McMillan, as well as running back Bucky Irving. Despite these absences, Mayfield expressed confidence in the team. "I truly and genuinely trust the guys that are in there," he said. "The guys are on the same page. I trust these guys, even though some of them haven't played a whole lot of ball."

Now, star rookie receiver Emeka Egbuka is sidelined with a hamstring injury, and the team continues to rely on the "next man up" mentality. Left tackle Tristan Wirfs stated that the Bucs are used to this situation and that it doesn’t change their mindset.

"Emeka, being a rookie, has stepped up big time. He went down," Wirfs said. "Tez Johnson, Kam Johnson—it is awesome to watch. Those guys have some big shoes to fill with Mike [Evans] and Chris [Godwin] out right now, but they are coming in and making plays, and that is all we can ask of them."

With the win, Tampa Bay improved to 5-1, tying the best six-game start in Buccaneers history. More importantly, the team now stands atop the NFC South heading into next Monday Night's showdown in Detroit, despite the ongoing injuries.

"It validates that we are 5-1," Bowles said. "It's week to week in this league. You can go from the penthouse to the outhouse, and we have to understand that."
