Closing Bell: ASX Rises as Copper Gains Outpace Gold Slump

ASX Gains Slight Momentum as Copper Outperforms Gold
The Australian Securities Exchange (ASX) experienced a modest rise of 0.1% on the day, with eight out of eleven sectors recording losses. However, the energy and resources sectors managed to drive gains, helping to offset the downturn in other areas. This movement was largely influenced by a drop in gold prices overnight, which impacted the All Ords Gold index significantly.
Gold futures fell more than 1%, leading to a 1.73% decline in the All Ords Gold index. Despite this setback, the ASX 200 managed to stay positive thanks to strong performances from major mining companies. BHP (ASX:BHP) and Rio Tinto (ASX:RIO), typically associated with iron ore, also play a significant role in copper production. Their stocks saw substantial increases, with BHP rising 3.55% and Rio Tinto climbing 3.96%.
This surge in copper prices was triggered by Freeport-McMoRan declaring force majeure at the Grasberg project in Indonesia. This action halted operations at the world's second-largest copper mine, causing a spike in copper prices. Other major copper producers also saw impressive gains, including Capstone Copper (ASX:CSC), which jumped 10.2%, and Sandfire Resources (ASX:SFR), which rose 7.6%.
These developments helped lift the ASX out of the red, showcasing the importance of the mining sector in stabilizing market performance. While the gold sector underperformed, spot gold prices hit a fresh high in the Asian trading session, hovering near US$3,745 an ounce. Gold futures also showed some recovery, climbing about 0.2% or US$8 an ounce, which could be a positive sign for future trading.
